When twins are expected, a caesarean section is usually recommended straight away. This is not because twin births are any more dangerous than the birth of a single child, but because midwives have lost the experience of attending twin births.

Premature twin girls survive together. This is attributed to the hug from the fitter twin sister. Afterwards, the weaker sister relaxed and her condition stabilised.

Wich criteria have to be fullfilled, to make homedeliveries possible (Caesarean section = 1 caesarean – repeat caesarean = 2 caesareans):

–  If the first child was born by caesarean section, is it possible to give birth at home or in a birthing centre afterwards?

–  In  case, a woman has had two caesarean sections without a subsequent vaginal birth’, a birth taking place outside a hospital cannot be claimed by the health insurance provider.

The term ‘post-re-sectio’ means that the woman has already had two caesarean sections. If the woman subsequently wishes to give birth at home, the midwife cannot claim the costs from the health insurance provider.

–     By virtue of her right to self-determination, a woman ‘may’ opt for a home birth even after two caesarean sections; however, all professional societies advise against this due to the increased risk of uterine rupture.

In individual cases, the midwife is permitted to decide, which riskshe is able and willing to co-sponser (as a self-pay-service for the woman).

BPD = breech presentation (i.e. the baby has not turned and is likely to be born bottom first) and twin births:

The following applies to both: “Provided that a doctor specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology is present during the birth, a breech birth and the birth of twins at home are possible.”
